Effortless Creation and Collaboration in SketchUp 2023
The next step in 3D creative modeling!
Welcome to the next step in creative exploration: SketchUp 2023 is live!
With the introduction of SketchUp 2023, SketchUp offers seamless collaboration between Revit and SketchUp through the Revit Importer for Studio, enhancing workflows with improved modelling tools.
In this new version of SketchUp, two major industry tools are connected: SketchUp & Revit! The Revit Importer is a valuable addition to the SketchUp Studio subscription for anyone working with or wanting to work with both software packages.
Enhancements to key tools streamline workflows in the desktop application. With the powerful toolset of SketchUp 2023, a new masterpiece is within reach.
As the SketchUp community has come to expect, there is also a new scale figure, and this time there are two! In 2023, it’s Senior Software Engineer Heather and her cat Lily.

Save Hours on Your Revit-to-SketchUp Workflow
With the new import feature within a Studio subscription, Revit models are accurately and efficiently converted to SketchUp geometry. This enables teams and stakeholders to collaborate better across various project phases.
There are already several workarounds to export Revit models to SketchUp, still this new import tool saves the most time, is more accurate in geometry conversion, and creates much lighter models.
Model structures between Revit and SketchUp are preserved, and Revit families and layers are neatly translated into groups, components, and tags in SketchUp. This saves a lot of time that would otherwise be spent on model cleanup, allowing the project to continue with precision. This lets everyone focus on what’s essential: refining the design idea.
Reasons to Use the Revit Importer
- Improve collaboration with project stakeholders who create Revit products.
- Preserve model structures for less cleanup.
- Import Revit models into SketchUp to quickly develop new ideas.
- Build more efficiently; the imported Revit file is automatically optimized for easier geometry manipulation in SketchUp and significantly reduces file size.
- Convince with visuals; Revit material colours and transparencies are respected during import to speed up visualization workflows.
- Easily convert Revit levels into SketchUp section planes.
The Revit Importer is a native functionality in the SketchUp Studio desktop application. Customers, who already have a Studio subscription, gain access to this feature as soon as they update to the 2023 version.
Pro subscription customers can temporarily test the Revit Importer from SketchUp Studio 2023 to evaluate this new workflow and see if upgrading to SketchUp Studio is worthwhile. No Revit license is required for this workflow.
Discoverable and Connected Workflows
With the new Studio installer, discover, download, and install all the tools needed for advanced workflows and complex projects.
The subscription also includes:
- V-Ray 6 for creating photorealistic renders
- Scan Essentials for importing point cloud data
Both were expanded with new functionalities at the end of 2022.
*Note: Studio is a Windows-only subscription.
Major Changes for Desktop
Build everything faster with new modelling and documentation features in SketchUp for Desktop. Discover a brand-new Flip tool that mirrors design elements predictably and manages DWG files in LayOut.
Flip with Confidence
Leave the guesswork out of Flip transformations with the brand-new Flip tool. Visualize the plane along which you want to mirror the selection in advance, then move over the red, green, or blue planes to confirm the correct orientation. Click to flip! Fewer clicks and less undoing mean more time developing, evaluating, and adjusting a symmetrical relationship.
Pro Tip: Quickly create a mirror relationship in a model to build more efficient components or make symmetrically oriented copies. Activate the Flip tool to enable copy mode and create a copy that is symmetrical to your selection.
Master Referencing in LayOut
Interoperability in LayOut is improved with the ability to manage imported DWG files as references. Sound familiar? It’s the same process for managing files with references in LayOut, but now it’s also available for all images, text files, or AutoCAD drawings.
View all external file references, get notifications if a file reference is outdated, and update, relink, or remove a file reference using the File Reference Manager.
Even better, all custom style edits (line weights, scale, and viewport positions) remain intact even when reference files are updated. Document and present without worries, knowing all references are up-to-date, without losing previous LayOut and styling work.
A True Renaissance Woman as Scale Figure
From cheese making and ice climbing to rescuing wild cats, there’s not much Heather can’t do. And as if that wasn’t enough, she’s also a Senior Software Engineer at SketchUp. She has significantly contributed to the updates of SketchUp 2023. Learn more about Heather and her cat, Lily. They are the new 2023 scale duo.
