Twinmotion 2026.1
April 2026
Photo Match Tools
A new set of photo match tools that provide seamless integration of 3D models into images has been added to the Ambience panel. You can find it in the Camera tab, under the new Backplate category.
With the photo match tools, you can load a background image and project shadows from your 3D scene onto it.
In Media mode, a new Match perspective tool provides you with an easy way to set the camera position and focal length by identifying the vanishing points in your backplate.
Known Issues and Limitations
-
- The Match perspective tool does not work on backplate images already corrected for perspective, such as architectural shots with straightened vertical lines, because no vanishing points remain.
- Enabling the Shadow catcher is resource-intensive and will significantly reduce FPS, as the image must be rendered three times to composite the shadow onto the backplate.
- Orthographic views are not supported when the Backplate feature is enabled.
- The Shadow catcher and Match perspective tools are not supported when the viewport is in Full screen mode.
Autosoft Edges
Discover Autosoft edges, a new feature that makes your renders more realistic by automatically smoothing out sharp edges. It works in both the Path tracer and Lumen rendering modes, and is a simple way to improve the quality of your visualisations and achieve a higher level of realism without the need for any technical expertise.
The Autosoft edges feature is accessible for imported meshes in the Properties panel. It is currently enabled for most Twinmotion assets, but works only on a subset of them.
Limitation
Lighting channels are not currently supported in the Lumen rendering mode when either Reflections only or Full are used for the Ray lighting mode. In these modes, lights will still appear in the reflections and global illumination of meshes, even if the lights and objects do not share the same channel.
Camera Barrel Distortion
With the new Barrel distortion slider, you can recreate the natural barrel distortion that occurs with real-world lenses, especially wide-angle ones. The barrel distortion effect subtly curves straight lines near the edges of the frame.
You can find the Barrel distortion slider in the Camera tab of the Ambience panel, under Lens > Details.
Anamorphic Oval and Petzval Bokeh
Additional options to recreate real-world lens bokeh based on Anamorphic oval and Petzval lenses have been added to the Depth of field category in the Camera tab of the Ambience panel.
Auto Focus
A new Auto focus option for Depth of field has been added to the Camera settings. With this option, the focal length is automatically set based on the center of the screen.
Improvements to the Particle Systems
The particle systems in the Library > Objects > VFX category have been completely revamped to enhance optimization and visual quality.
This update introduces newly reworked fire, fog, smoke, and water jet effects, along with new customizable parameters to tailor the effects to your needs.
European Tree Pack
A collection of 30 photorealistic European trees has been added to the Twinmotion Library. It offers a rich diversity of shapes and sizes, providing you with more flexibility to enhance and enrich your scenes.
Every tree species is offered in 3 variations, enabling you to achieve a more natural look when used in the same biome.
Datasmith Plugin Notification System
A new Datasmith Exporter plugin notification system has been added to the Home panel under Plugins. You will now be notified if there is a Datasmith plugin available to download. The system will detect which 3D modeling softwares and version are installed on your system, and will offer a download link for the Datasmith Exporter plugin for that software.
Additionally, notifications will appear in the Home panel when there is an available update for an already installed Datasmith Exporter plugin. A red dot will appear on the Plugins tab in the Home panel, and on the Home panel icon in Twinmotion, to indicate these notifications.
Interchange Import for the FBX and OBJ File Formats
Twinmotion is gradually shifting away from their legacy importing pipeline towards a proprietary importing pipeline called Interchange. The benefits of this importing method are a better control on the fidelity of initial imports, as well as on reimports with objects in the scene that have undergone overrides. The first two file formats Twinmotion is introducing Interchange with are FBX and OBJ imports.
Additionally, Twinmotion is deprecating the function Collapse by material as its original main function was to optimize the file on import. With new features such as Lumen and Path tracer, this function has caused issues, and due to limitations are not resolvable. There are many workarounds to have the same control and optimization as Collapse by material. Users can use Collapse all and still apply materials to identical materials with the Replace material option for material application. Please review the list of known bugs for reference.
Twinmotion added a new Use legacy importer option in the Preferences panel under Import in the Settings tab. When the checkbox is selected, all imports for the .fbx and .obj file types fall back to the legacy importing pipeline. Keep in mind that this checkbox will remain selected when you close and reopen a Twinmotion project or window. You will need to manually deselect the checkbox to return to the Twinmotion Interchange importing pipeline. This feature is a temporary preference option designed to help users who are encountering issues with the Interchange import pipeline.
Deprecations
- Collapse by material
New features with Interchange for .fbx and .obj file types
- Reset transform on selected
- Reset material on selected
- Reimport deleted objects
Unreal Engine Landscape Integration
Twinmotion recently revamped its terrain system by adopting Unreal Engine’s native landscape system. There is no additional feature in the user interface, but this update fixes several Lumen-related issues, ensures full Lumen support, and enables terrains to contribute to global illumination for more realistic lighting.
This integration also prepares Twinmotion for the following future Unreal Engine developments: more efficient handling of large scenes (work partitioning and streaming), support for large open worlds, better consistency with Procedural Content Generation (PCG), and stronger alignment with ray-traced rendering workflows.
Xcode Requirement on macOS
To run Twinmotion 2026.1 on macOS, Apple requires that Xcode be installed on your computer. Xcode is a free Apple application used by macOS to run certain software components.
If Xcode is not installed on your computer, a message will appear the first time you attempt to open Twinmotion to let you know it is missing. To open Twinmotion, you will need to install Xcode, and open it at least once to accept the licensing terms and to install additional software.
Persistent File Location
Starting with Twinmotion 2026.1, the cloud-based content you download in Twinmotion is stored in a persistent file folder structure. This ensures that any content you download and any assets you copy to the User library can be accessed immediately when you install a new version of Twinmotion. The cloud-based content includes: the Twinmotion Library packs, the Twinmotion native assets, the Quixel Megascans and Sketchfab library assets, and the Twinmotion visualization templates.
Better Library Support
The library items from previous versions that were not supported in 2025.2 are now supported and visible in the Library panel.
The User library now supports instant updates. If a User library that is shared among many users is updated (for example, if an asset or a folder is added or deleted), it will be instantly updated for all users of the shared User library.
Bake Scale on Imports
Twinmotion has updated object scaling on import to resolve many issues caused by inherited transform scales.
When importing, the transform scale in Twinmotion will now always be set to 100%, 100%, 100%. Any scaling from your DCC (such as SketchUp, Rhino3D or 3ds Max) is applied directly to the geometry, not the transform. This applies to all objects, including instanced objects.
This change eliminates problems associated with negative and non-uniform scaling, greatly improving rendering precision and overall stability. Your imported assets will look correct while maintaining clean transform data.
Properties Panel Revamp for Imported Animated Files
The Properties panel settings for imported animated files have been completely reworked. Additional controls have been added to better align animated files with the workflow of other animated assets, such as the animators.
Configuration Improvements
A new option has been added to capture the camera position for an entire configuration. The shape of triggers and of states can now be customized and switched from circle to rounded corner or square. Certain user interface changes have been done to simplify the overall experience.
Substrate Materials
Preparatory steps have been taken to transition to Substrate materials in the future. Users should not experience any important visual differences.
Tessellation Controls for Selected *.wire Objects
You can now refine or simplify the mesh tessellation of imported *.wire objects directly from the Properties panel in Twinmotion. This brings the same tessellation controls available at import time into the scene workflow, allowing you to adjust geometry without reimporting the file.
After selecting a *.wire object in the scene, the Tessellation section provides the following controls which are all similar to the controls the user will get in the Import window.
- Tessellation preset and Preset Manager
- Chord tolerance
- Geometric tolerance
- Use max edge (checkbox)
- Max edge length
- Normal tolerance
- Stitching tolerance
- Stitching technique (None, Heal, Sew)

Epic also added several new procedural cyclorama assets to simulate curved backdrops used in product shots to make the background seemingly disappear, bringing the focus onto the product itself. The width, depth, and height can be adjusted for each asset, as well as the radius of the curves.
New and Improved Materials
This release sees a plethora of new drag-and-drop, physically based materials added to Twinmotion’s already extensive library, as well as enhancements to the base materials.
First up, 78 new materials have been added to the Fabric, Leather, Plastic, and Metal categories. Hosted on the cloud, the new materials come with 4K textures, making them suitable for close-up camera views.
Also, there has been added a new material type with dedicated parameters and features for handling effects specific to car paint, such as Flakes and Orange Peel, enabling you to simulate a wide range of finishes including chameleon and pearlescent paint. There are 34 new materials in this category.
On top of all these general improvements, the Glass base materials now have an option to use the thin translucent shading mode, and texture maps can be added to Base Color, Roughness, Metallic, and Normal channels; there are also new parameters such as Index of Refraction, Iridescence, and Imperfections. Twenty-two new materials have been added to the Glass material library as a result.
New Ready-Posed Humans and Standard Assets
300 New ready-posed humans have been added in categories such as Summer, Business, Construction, Travel, and University, and nearly a thousand standard assets in Backyard, Sports Equipment, Storage, Decoration, Bathroom, Office, and Healthcare categories—making it easy to populate a wider range of scenes with appropriate, high-quality, ready-made drag-and-drop assets.
Twinmotion Datasmith File Exporter
Twinmotion now has a built-in Datasmith file exporter, which enables you to export your project —including materials, static meshes, and textures—in a format that Unreal Engine can understand, helping ensure materials are properly applied to assets that are from the cloud.
Optimized Twinmotion File Format
The Twinmotion file format has been modified in several ways: identical meshes and textures in a project can be detected and duplication avoided in the save file; scenes are saved with multithreaded compression on multi-core hardware; and HDRI files are now considerably compressed and embedded in Twinmotion files. These changes have a positive impact on file size, scene saving and loading times, and global performance.
Unreal Engine 5.1
Twinmotion now supports Unreal Engine 5.1, which greatly improves the Viewport display compared to previous versions
LED Wall
LED walls are used to create backgrounds for the entertainment industry (shows/films/television) in order to preview the stage before performances or filming. The LED wall can be used with both Twinmotion rendering modes, Real-time and Path tracer, and has emissive properties to light up your scenes.
Non-Symmetric IES Lights
In addition to fixing certain regressions that were introduced in previous builds, the functionality of IES lights has been improved. It is now possible to import non-symmetric IES files and render them accurately.

Twinmotion 2016
14 december 2015
BIMmotion
A free EXE file (mono/stereo) that contains your model and the Twinmotion engine. Your client can then view your Twinmotion projects on their own machine (Windows 8 and 10), modify perspectives, follow animations, freely navigate in 3D or along a defined path, and even evaluate various project alternatives.
Project Phasing
View the project at various stages of progress. Each phase of construction can be visualized and evaluated.
Real Landscape
To create a landscape, you can use the Twinmotion terrain library, but you can also import your own point cloud or mesh. This will automatically be converted into a Twinmotion landscape, which you can edit, sculpt, paint, and plant.
Library Updates
Twinmotion 2016 offers even more realistic materials, objects, vegetation, and characters (including cyclists). New animated objects include cranes, boats, and wind turbines. There is also a new category: fountains.
Graphics Optimizations
Twinmotion is up to 25% faster in calculating and rendering your images. The real-time preview can be up to 200% faster if you choose the new ‘Draft’ mode with a lower resolution display.
Fingertip Navigation
