A Booth for SketchUp created with SketchUp
Exhibition Builder Dehullu Projekt B.V. has been using SketchUp for many years

From its headquarters in Ochten, located in the Betuwe region, Dehullu Projekt B.V. has been creating unique interiors, shop-in-shops, events, and exhibition booths worldwide for over 50 years. For its conceptual designs, it has been using SketchUp for nearly a decade. Moreover, it frequently visits distributor Design8 bv for training sessions on SketchUp and related extensions. Thus, choosing SketchUp to design an exhibition booth for the Bouwbeurs 2023 was an obvious decision.
Briefing and Design
SketchUp distributor Design8 also chose Dehullu in 2019 to build their exhibition booth. For Junior Project Manager Koen Brooijmans, the previously realized SketchUp booth served as the starting point to reevaluate Design8’s wishes and needs. A completely new design was created since the primary colour in SketchUp’s branding had changed from red to blue. As inspiration for the latest design, previously realized booths and interiors by Dehullu were reviewed, allowing the desired materials and ambience to be inventoried. Natural materials became the foundation of the Bouwbeurs 2023 booth for both Design8 bv and Dehullu.

The discussed materials, accessories, layouts, and other details were then passed on by Koen to Sanne de Jong, a designer at Dehullu. Using SketchUp, she created two booth concepts: one featuring many custom-made objects that would remain the client’s property and another utilizing rental materials that could also be used for other clients. Both options were designed with sustainability in mind—custom objects could be reused by the client, while rental materials could be repurposed for future booths.
These designs were then presented by Koen to Design8. Sanne created a beautifully formatted A3 presentation document in LayOut, including photorealistic renders produced with V-Ray for SketchUp. This gave Design8 an immediate and clear vision of the layout and appearance of both booth concepts. Ultimately, the concept with custom-made objects was chosen, as it better reflected SketchUp’s branding and exuded more ambience.
SketchUp for iPad
Koen often uses the SketchUp for iPad app during client presentations. “The iPad version is just very user-friendly, and it allows me to guide clients through their new booth in a simple and visual way. Since SketchUp for iPad is still relatively new, we’re not yet using it to its full potential. The Mark Up Mode, for example, seems very useful for ensuring a smooth workflow between the project manager and the design team. If a client wants adjustments to their booth, annotations can be added via Trimble Connect as a separate scene in the SketchUp file. This way, Sanne can immediately see in the office what changes are needed for the concept. This is definitely something we plan to explore further.”

Technical Execution
After all the wishes, needs, and adjustments have been processed and a final design has been completed, the design is handed over to the technical draftsmen. They then create detailed plans for the walls and structures required to realize the booth. Since Design8 opted for several custom-made objects, such as demo stations, these are further developed into separate detailed drawings. All this drafting work is also done using SketchUp and LayOut.

Based on the technical drawings, Dehullu uses the project management tool Trello to create a to-do list for production in the workshop. Each component is defined as a separate task, including information such as dimensions and colour. Documents can also be attached in Trello, allowing production staff to view the technical drawings directly. Once a component is completed, the task is checked off, giving project management an instant overview of the project’s progress. When all components are produced, Dehullu transports them to the exhibition hall, where the booth is assembled.
A Living Room Feeling at de Bouwbeurs
“We look back on a successful Bouwbeurs with this stunning booth,” says Robert van Dee, Marketing Manager at Desig8 bv, “We immediately stood out in the exhibition hall to visitors thanks to excellent signage and the use of natural and warm materials. As a result, the booth almost felt like a living room.”
“The customized workstations were also a real eye-catcher in our opinion. We look forward to using the elements of this booth at many future events.”
